Electropollution is an invisible agent we have in all homes and is harming us, our appliances, and our spaces in many ways without us knowing the origin of the problem. How do you know if you are living in a healthy home from the point of view of electrosmog? 

Electrosmog is everywhere, including your home. This environmental toxin is generated by telecommunications, wireless signals, your appliances, and the electricity that powers them. According to scientific studies, this type of pollution is full of interferences that affect our health (and that of all living species), the quality of our spaces, our devices, and even the quality of the wireless signals we use daily. 

Electromagnetic hygiene is what we call it when you genuinely care for the sanitation of your spaces from the point of view of electromagnetic pollution. This sanitation of your spaces involves knowing what are the main sources that are generating this type of pollution, the most exposed spaces, the most vulnerable inhabitants, and what are the corrective measures you must take to minimize the impact of this pollution in your home.

Of course, the emissions levels are always different in all homes, as there are various aspects to consider that are not only on the inside but also on the outside and surroundings. But, as we are not able to make an overall evaluation of the million possible conditions of every home, we are going to focus on those controllable aspects on the inside of your home.

  1. Kitchen

Our kitchens are the most polluted place in our home in terms of electropollution. Kitchens are usually the places with the highest concentration of appliances working altogether simultaneously, and these are usually the electronics that demand the highest amount of power to work. You have to keep in mind that these EMF emissions in your kitchen are not only affecting your health and the durability of your appliances, but it is also affecting the preservation and quality of your food.

When evaluating electrosmog emissions in the kitchen, there are some additional important factors to consider: how frequent is the use of the appliances? For how long do you use them? How old are they? Are they smart? Are they always connected? Even when there are many appliances there, many of them are only used intermittently and for short periods, and that does make a difference in the levels of exposure the home’s inhabitants are receiving. Others are from different generations, and others are smart and connected through wireless signals, which also makes a difference in the emissions. 

For example, an electric oven is not the same as one that works with gas. Electric ovens and stoves, due to their operation, the electric induction produces a significantly large electric field around them. For example, if you spend 2 to 3 hours in front of the electric stove, you’re getting quite a significant electric field exposure. But if your roommate uses it intermittently and just for a few minutes, the exposure level he’s receiving is considerably less than yours.

Then we have the microwave oven. This has been the subject of much debate: what is the harm of the microwave oven? But there is also a very important factor: What is the use you give to the microwave oven? Some people commonly say they use the microwave oven to store food they don’t need to refrigerate. “I just store things, I don’t use it, so is it still harming me in the same way?” The answer is No. 

It’s a home appliance that’s plugged and it’s being powered with electricity to show you a time on a small clock, but the magnetron (the device that shoots microwave radiation to heat the food) isn’t working. So, as long as the magnetron is not working, the impact is quite small. But consider that this changes drastically once you turn it on, as the microwave oven might be one of the most power-consuming ad highly emitting appliances when operating.

Just after the microwave oven, we have the fridge. Fridges are always on, always consuming, and always emitting. Nowadays, with the modernization of home appliances, fridges have gradually become the kitchen’s main electrosmog pollutant, as they are also using advanced sensors, large touchscreens, and even wireless signals, which is adding high-frequency emissions to the already high power consumption

There are also other small devices in your kitchen such as coffee makers, toasters, and blenders. These are all emitting EMF  and, even though their use can be very intermittent and their emissions significantly lower, those are adding up to the emissions of the other bigger appliances around. 

Our suggestion

First of all: If you are not using one of your electronic kitchen devices at the moment, it is best to keep it disconnected until you need it. Remember that connected appliances, even if they are not turned on, keep a charge at rest and an electric field around the cable.
